Connected variable codes

QR code & DataMatrix
printing on-line.

High-resolution 2D codes for traceability, serialization, digital links and product information—generated and verified at production speed.

Machine-readable data

A scannable code
is an engineered output.

QR and DataMatrix codes can carry far more data than a human-readable batch code, but their compact geometry makes print quality and production control critical.

We help define the data source, symbology, code dimensions, print location, substrate and inspection method as one traceability workflow.

Data workflow

Put the right data
on the right product.

The printer can receive fixed templates with changing fields, locally generated sequences, data from a PLC, or records supplied by manufacturing and serialization systems.

The chosen architecture should prevent duplicate codes, manage line stoppages and make recovery predictable when production is interrupted.

  • Date, time, batch and shift variables
  • Sequential or externally supplied serial numbers
  • Recipe-controlled message selection
  • Database and networked data exchange
Data integrity

Define what happens to a serial number after a rejected print, line stop or rework event before production begins.

Code inspection

Print, read,
respond.

A fixed reader can confirm that a code is present and decodable. A vision system can also compare expected data, inspect location and trigger a controlled response when a pack fails.

Projects requiring formal grading need an appropriate verifier and defined standard; an ordinary barcode reader is not a substitute for verification.

  • Presence and readability inspection
  • Expected-data comparison
  • No-read and mismatch signalling
  • Reject, stop-line and alarm integration
Design for inspection

Reserve a clear print window and keep guides, glare, curvature and vibration away from the camera view.

2D code applications

One printed mark,
many workflows.

The same print technology can support consumer information and controlled industrial traceability when the code and data architecture are appropriate.

01

GS1 DataMatrix

Application identifiers for product, batch, expiry and serial data in a compact code.

02

GS1 Digital Link

Web-enabled product identifiers connecting physical packs to controlled digital information.

03

Serialization

Unique codes managed across printing, inspection, reject handling and reporting.

04

Work-in-progress

Codes linking components or products to routing, build and quality records.

05

Consumer QR

Product information, instructions, authentication journeys and promotions.

06

Logistics labels

Variable shipping, carton and pallet identifiers produced as goods move.

Code design

Define the scan
before the printer.

The required data and scanner determine minimum code needs. The available print window then determines the practical system.

Frequently asked

Useful answers

Can a thermal inkjet printer create a different QR code on every pack?+

Yes, when the controller and data connection support variable records at the required line speed. Data supply, buffering, duplicate prevention and inspection should be designed together.

What is the difference between QR Code and DataMatrix?+

Both are two-dimensional codes. QR is common in consumer-facing applications, while DataMatrix is widely used for compact industrial and regulated traceability. The correct choice depends on the data standard and scanners.

Does a barcode reader grade code quality?+

Not necessarily. A reader establishes whether it can decode the symbol. Formal quality measurement requires a verifier and method that meets the relevant application standard.

Can TIJ print GS1-compliant codes?+

TIJ can physically print supported GS1 symbologies, but compliance also depends on correct data structure, dimensions, quiet zones, print quality and verification.
