Industrial TIJ coders · UK
Cartridge-based high-resolution coding systems for variable text, dates, batches, serial numbers and machine-readable codes.
Technology matched to task
Thermal inkjet, usually shortened to TIJ, uses a replaceable ink cartridge with an integrated print mechanism. Droplets are fired only when required, creating sharp variable information without a continuously circulating ink system.
The right result still depends on the complete application: code content, required height, line speed, substrate, ink chemistry, throw distance, product stability and the way production data reaches the printer. Oxford Traceability brings those decisions together.
How TIJ works
A TIJ printhead contains an array of microscopic nozzles. Tiny ink chambers are rapidly heated, forming bubbles that propel precise droplets towards the product as it passes.
Because the ink cartridge contains the key ink-delivery components, routine changeover can be straightforward. Print quality and uptime still rely on correct mounting, reliable product detection and sensible cleaning procedures.
Quoted resolution and speed are not independent. Higher line speeds, larger messages and challenging substrates can change the achievable result.
System selection
A printer that performs perfectly on an absorbent carton may need a different ink and set-up on coated film or metal. Even two visually similar labels can behave differently.
We use application details and sample testing to establish the correct ink family, printhead arrangement and control method before equipment is finalised.
Send representative production materials—not only artwork proofs—so adhesion and dry time can be assessed on the surface actually used.
Typical applications
TIJ systems can cover straightforward date coding through to connected variable-data workflows when the controller and integration are specified correctly.

Frequently asked
For application-specific advice, call 01865 362785.
TIJ stands for thermal inkjet. A tiny heater in the cartridge rapidly forms a bubble that ejects a controlled ink droplet through the nozzle.
The printer itself commonly does not require compressed air. Other line equipment, guarding or reject systems may have separate pneumatic requirements.
TIJ normally performs best with a small and consistent throw distance. The exact acceptable gap depends on the cartridge, speed, substrate and required code quality, so product control is important.
Many industrial TIJ platforms support multiple printheads for wider or taller print areas, different product faces or separate line positions. Controller capability must be checked.
